Fakhria Nezami is a young female Afghani artist who arrived in the UK from Kabul in August 2021. Her and her entire family fled persecution from the Taliban, losing everything. Our Employment Services have supported her to re-build her art and jewellery making portfolio, including at the Corner Collective gallery in Southsea.
As Fakhria’s work amalgamates traditional Islamic art and calligraphy with a distinct modernist flair she was of course out of favour with, and subject to persecution by, the Taliban. Accordingly, she and her immediate family fled Afghanistan during the airlift and were settled temporarily in Southampton. Sadly, her entire portfolio, equipment, workshop and website were left behind in the chaos of civil war and disorder. The current regime in Kabul- Taliban- are anti-art, repressive of expression, and intensely anti-female empowerment. Tragically, there is no place in Afghanistan safe for Fakhria and by default, her family.
Using personal network connections in the arts community, and our Abri partnership with Portsmouth Creates, Victorious Events, Grateful Arts Club and Southsea Folk we were able to assist Fakhria in buying basic materials to enable her to begin to re-create and expand her portfolio of incredibly detailed, highly poignant and unique paintings. After introductions to various artists were made, particularly within the increasingly recognised Portsmouth and Southampton street art community – Fakhria was offered studio space with nationally known artist Fark and on Saturday 23 July Farks studio – The Corner Collective- exhibited her work for the first time in the UK. Turnout was great, pieces were sold and Fakhria will exhibit her work in the constituency office of Steven Morgan MP (Portsmouth South).
Our support for Fakhria has not only enabled her to regain her artistic passions but have helped her immensely in starting to feel a part of our wider Abri Community. We are hoping to be able to assist in finding Fakhria and her family permanent residence in the Solent area as her connections here are now both established and fruitful.
