We’re raising awareness of different forms of abuse over 16 days. Why? Because we can’t address what we don’t talk about and we want everyone to feel safe and supported to seek help if they need it.
We want to start meaningful conversations and highlight the help available to put a stop to abuse, of all kinds, both now and in the future.
Today we’re focusing on the Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC).
What is MARAC?
MARAC is attended by representatives from the police, child protection services, mental health specialists and independent advisors. Together these agencies draw up an action plan to help manage the risk to someone experiencing domestic abuse.
It aims to increase the safety, health and wellbeing of victims and survivors and determine whether the alleged perpetrator poses a risk to any person or community.
The process
- Asses the risk through a DASH assessment. Carry out any immediate safety measures, which might include safeguarding of young people and target hardening at a property.
- Refer to appropriate support services, which might include an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor.
- Carry out research to better understand the situation at hand.
- Meet and share information to get a clear picture of the risk.
- Put together an action plan for the person(s) involved.
- Follow up with the MARAC team to confirm when agreed actions have taken place.
Since its inception in 2001 MARAC has proved to be a significant initiative in dealing effectively with domestic abuse. We work regularly with partners to help our customers get the right support for them.
