Abri, a leading housing provider, has successfully completed its development near Tynte Road in Bridgwater, delivering 37 high-quality affordable homes to the local community. The homes have been constructed by Speller Metcalfe on a previously unused site adjacent to Bridgwater College Academy.
The development called Redwood Court, represents a £9.8million investment into the area and has been made possible through Abri’s own funding and grant support from its Strategic Partnership with Homes England, the government’s housing and delivery agency.
All homes at Redwood Court have been made available for affordable rent, contributing to efforts to address the growing demand for affordable housing across Somerset. The development includes a mix of one-bedroom flats and two- and three-bedroom houses, designed to support a variety of household needs. With more than 12,000 households currently on Somerset Council’s waiting list for social housing, these new homes play a vital role in expanding access to secure, quality accommodation. Allocation is managed through the Council’s Homefinder Somerset system, which ensures fair and transparent access based on housing need.
Councillor Sarah Wakefield, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Adults Services, Housing and Homelessness, visited the completed site where residents have already begun moving in. She commented:
“It’s fantastic to see these affordable homes completed and already making a difference to local people. Affordable housing is essential to keeping our communities strong and connected, and I’m delighted to have viewed the high standard of these new homes.”
The development is entirely gas-free and features sustainable technologies including air source heat pumps and electric vehicle charging points to reduce the carbon footprint of the homes. Each home has been finished to a high specification, supporting Abri’s commitment to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Sam Stone, Director of Land and Planning at Abri, said:
“We’re proud to deliver this flagship development in Bridgwater. Abri is committed to building 10,000 homes by 2030, and developments like Redwood Court are key to achieving that goal. We’re grateful to our partners and everyone involved in bringing these homes to life. Affordable housing is vital to helping communities thrive, and we’re pleased to be part of that journey.”
Mark Eaton, divisional director at Speller Metcalfe, said:
"The Tynte Road development is a prime example of how sustainability is driving the future of affordable housing. These homes will not only cut energy consumption but also ease residents’ costs, while meeting the community’s need for local housing."
