In August 2024, the Community Pantry at Longwood Park was launched to support local residents facing the rising cost of living and to help reduce food waste. By offering food and essential household items at affordable prices, the pantry quickly became a valued resource. Within a year, membership grew to over 100, with around 30 families visiting each week. Many have shared how the pantry has eased financial stress and helped them manage their household budgets.
As demand increased, so did the need for more support. We recruited a team of volunteers—many of whom are Abri customers and pantry users themselves. They received training in basic health and safety, embraced the project’s values and goals, and completed a Level 3 Hygiene Certificate.
Over the past three months, these volunteers have played a vital role in the pantry’s weekly operations. Beyond supporting the project, they’ve gained valuable skills—such as improved communication and food handling—and developed greater confidence and a strong sense of achievement. Many now see themselves as active contributors to their community, and the teamwork experience has helped them build skills for working with others.
One inspiring story is that of Jo, a volunteer who returned home after six months in hospital recovering from cancer. With limited mobility, Jo can’t walk far, stand for long periods, or lift heavy items. Volunteering at the pantry has been her lifeline. The team adapted her role so she could contribute meaningfully without physical strain. For Jo, the pantry has helped combat isolation, rebuild confidence, and foster friendships.
“I look forward to it every week,” Jo shared. “It gets me out of my flat – so it’s social – but I’m also involved. I feel like I’m actually contributing something, which to me is important.”
The Community Pantry has become more than just a place to access affordable food—it’s a space of connection, purpose, and pride.
“It breaks up my week,” Jo added. “On a Tuesday, I know Wednesday is delivery day – it’s something to look forward to. And we have a bit of banter as well. I enjoy it.”
