We’re excited to share that the Sawyers Close Community Garden was the runner up for the Garden in Bloom 2021.
Sawyers Close residents, Carole Lines, Karen O’Dwyer and Stewart Gorton worked hard to build on the garden that originally started in a disused washing line area and was then relocated to its current spot.
This year they wanted to create a patio area to make the garden useful all year round. And with support from one of the residents, who works for Sabberton Landscapes, they managed to get a really good deal and now have a lovely community seating area.
The garden also sits alongside a wildflower area full of cow parsley, poppies and daisies, and a community vegetable plot.
Carole explained: “We’ve chosen insect friendly plants and have a bird feeder which has attracted Robins, Woodpeckers, Blackbirds and Goldfinches and many of them have nested a few times over the spring and summer.”
Stewart added: “The cow parsley has turned into a ladybird nursery, and the shed is home to a large nest of earwigs.”
Carole added: “We want to encourage the children to come and have a look and take an interest in nature so we are going to provide magnifying glasses, which should be fun.”
Karen and Carole concluded: “We set out to create a community garden, and that’s what we achieved. It’s been created by, and used by, the community. Abri helped source some funds to help the garden get started, and we’re really proud of what’s been achieved this year.”
On choosing the garden as runner up, The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Cllr, Helen Price, said: “I selected the Sawyers Close Community Garden as the runner up as they have moved the garden on from last year. As well as creating the seating area which can be used in all weathers, they have really colourful mini hanging baskets on the picket fence.”
