Work will soon start on a new 100% affordable housing development in Newbury which will deliver 79 high-quality homes for local people.
Following planning permission approval in March 2025, Archel Homes has agreed the land sale of 20-28 Pound Street to large housing provider, Abri, who will use its own funding alongside grant funding through its Strategic Partnership with Homes England to make all the homes affordable. The total investment in delivering the new affordable homes will exceed £25 million.
Built by Abri’s in-house construction team, the development will provide a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments across three buildings and ten three-bedroom family homes. The new homes will help revitalise former commercial space along Pound Street in Newbury, and all the homes will be for affordable and social rent, which are typically 20 per cent and 50 per cent lower than private market rents, respectively.
Gavin Board, Senior Land Manager at Abri said:
“We’re proud to be delivering this fully affordable scheme in Newbury through our own in-house construction team which means we can ensure the homes are built to our highest quality standards.
“The 79 homes we’re building here mark another important step in Abri’s commitment to building 10,000 homes by 2030. Houses are more than just bricks and mortar, they become the foundation for wellbeing and living well in a secure, safe place where futures can be built.”
Jamie Pearson, owner at Archel Homes said:
“We’re delighted to have worked with Abri on this exciting project, which represents a significant investment in the future of Newbury. This fully affordable development will not only provide much-needed homes for local people, but also lasting benefits to the wider community. We look forward to seeing it being developed and contributing positively to the regeneration and vibrancy of the area.”
Construction of the new homes is anticipated to start in September 2025, and the homes are expected to be completed in early 2028.
