Communities in Gosport are leading the way in tackling climate change with a series of climate cafés taking place over the coming months.
Gosport Borough Cricket Club is one local group taking steps to reduce their impact on the climate, and are using their community hub, Privett’s Pavilion, to host the cafés thanks to funding from the Gosport Community Lottery.
The project has come about as part of the Gosport Climate Change Partnership Board, which includes Abri, one of the south’s largest housing providers, Incredible Edible Gosport and Love Outdoors CIC.
“We’re excited to be part of this project which is giving communities a voice and an opportunity to get involved in tackling climate change,” says Barbara Cooke, Community Development Officer at Abri and Gosport Climate Change Partnership Board Member.
“We think it’s the first of its kind in Gosport and we’ll be exploring different aspects over the coming weeks – all driven by what communities have told us they’re interested in. We firmly believe that by working together on this, we can help improve the quality of life for everyone and create a fairer and healthier Gosport.”
The first session takes place on Friday 4 March, 10am – 12noon and everyone is welcome.
The theme is Fairtrade Fortnight and members of Gosport Fairtrade Association and Co-op will be there to share why Fairtrade is important to the climate. Teas, coffees and light refreshments will be served and there’ll be a free raffle to win a Fairtrade hamper.
If your organisation or community group would like to run a café session to showcase the work you’re doing to tackle climate change, or for more information on the Gosport climate café, please contact Barbara Cooke, Community Development Officer at Abri by emailing Barbara.cooke@abri.co.uk.
