What apprenticeship did you do? And when?
Level 3 Surveying Technician Apprenticeship 2022 to 2025 (had to change providers after year 1 from CCCG to JACE)
What made you look into apprenticeships?
I had joined Abri (Radian, in September 2018 and worked two years in the Customer Service Centre and moved across to an entry level role as Development Officer in Land and Planning for the North Team (now Southeast). I didn’t have any background experience or qualifications and wanted to build knowledge for my role. The Apprenticeship was fully funded by Abri and I was allowed 1 day a week off work to attend the classes and complete my assignments. On completion of the Apprenticeship it would allow me to gain AssocRICS status, a globally recognised accreditation.
How has it helped you develop your career?
I have the confidence that I have sound knowledge and detail of a range of subject applicable to my role in Land & Planning. Completing the Apprenticeship definitely aided my progression into 2 promotions to Assistant Land Manager and now Land Manager.
How did you find doing an apprenticeship alongside your role?
The comfort of knowing that I had the time away from my job role eased the pressure of completing the units and assignments, including the End Point Assessments. However, your job comes first and there were times where the Apprenticeship had to come second.
I was really well supported by my Managers Fergus Cruikshank and Gavin Board who allowed me the freedom and trust to spend extra time when required to complete my work. Additionally, John Macklin was able to be my Councillor and he has supported many other colleagues who have successfully gained AssocRICS over the past few years.
Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship and if so, why?
Absolutely! I hadn’t studied like this since completing my degree back in 2015. My advice would be to keep on top of the weekly work, logging CPD hours and experience so you’re not playing catch up by the end of the 2 years! Having completed the Apprenticeship I am now considering in the near future to gain full MRICS accreditation.
For anyone considering an apprenticeship, speak to your managers, colleagues or anyone else who has completed one in your role for their views, it certainly was very worthwhile!
