In 2019 the Sawyers Close Gardening Group secured £10k from Awards for All, part of the National Lottery Funding, to create a beautiful garden for every resident to enjoy. Since then the community garden has sprang to life, and even been recognised at local awards.
The garden is a real symbol of community spirit, with volunteers coming together to make it a relaxing spot for the everyone to enjoy. During lockdown families and individuals who live in the area planted salad and vegetables to grow and share, while providing a safe place for people to sit and spend time in nature during an isolated time. Residents have also enjoyed learning new skills, and local children have been getting involved too.
The garden is a great way for people to exercise their creativity as well, and the group upcycled an old bench into a large planter which won an award at the Windsor in Bloom awards earlier this year. Most recently an active member of the group won a £50 voucher through her workplace as part of a random acts of winter kindness competition, which has been donated to the Windsor Homeless Project.
The garden is now a beautiful festive space, with tinsel, lights and a Christmas tree adorning the area. It’s bringing joy to the community, at a time when it’s truly needed.
We look forward to sharing more updates about the garden with you in the new year.
