It’s Supported Housing Week – a new-for-2026 campaign led by the National Housing Federation, developed to raise awareness of the important role this provision plays.
From affordable housing for older adults to accessible properties which suit individual needs, supported housing is an essential resource in England and one which is reliant on effective partnership working to ensure its success. Pivotally, by delivering accessible and appropriate supported housing we’re helping to ease the faced by external services – think hospitals and health-care settings – which continue to face challenges in today’s complex climate.
With more than 4,000 supported homes, our offer covers 21 local authorities and 38 different care and support providers. At Abri, these homes go by three names, but what do we mean when we say Independent Living, Partnership Living, and Extra Care?
Independent Living
For people starting a new chapter in life’s later years, Independent Living offers both personal independence and a sense of community. Combining individual homes that sit alongside communal spaces, residents have the opportunity to cultivate new connections while maintaining a sense of personal freedom.
Partnership Living
Supported housing is nuanced, and our Partnership Living provision – which includes shared houses, move-on accommodation and schemes set up to complement the delivery of specialist support – showcase that nuance.
Our priority is delivering the right accommodation to ensure the support needs of residents are met in a supportive environment. We don’t allocate supported homes of this kind, but we work closely with local authorities to ensure our supported housing is reaching the people who need it most.
A diversity of lived experiences are represented in Partnership Living homes, so by nurturing new and existing relationships with external partners we can make sure we’re delivering homes which suit the circumstances surrounding those experiences.
Extra Care
Similar to Independent Living but with care services and an ever-present staff, Extra Care prioritises that important sense of independence we know people seek in later life while delivering tailored support. With five schemes, Extra Care is the smaller side of our supported housing provision but no less important. At these schemes, residents receive bespoke one-to-one care in a place that doesn’t compromise their sense of home.
While each of these offers represent a different aspect of supported housing, they are all important provisions with high levels of demand. As Supported Housing Week demonstrates the impact of this provision, we join their call for increased funding alongside ambitious national solutions to on-going challenges.
