72 affordable homes get the green light in Woking

Woking Council this week gave its final approval to Radian Group’s plans for 72 new affordable homes on Portugal Road, Woking. This comes after unanimous support from councillors at February’s Planning Committee meeting.

The homes will be built on two brownfield sites, facing each other across Portugal Road, close to the town centre and train station. The existing Lok N Store facility will be demolished, together with adjacent properties, to make way for two new buildings that will house 51 apartments; a third block, with a further 21 apartments, will be built opposite.

The focus for the development will be affordable homeownership, with 51 of the homes proposed to be available for shared ownership, helping people to move onto the property ladder. The remainder will be let out at affordable rents to local families. All bar three of the apartments will be one- and two-bed, reflecting local need.

Rounding out the scheme will be 61 off-street parking spaces, provided at both basement and surface level. This reflects the town centre location but is still in excess of Woking Council’s requirements.
