Bincombe Park is a growing community in Weymouth, surrounded by beautiful coastline and green spaces, including the nearby Lorton Nature Reserve. Who is your Community Development Officer?

My name is Sophie and I started working for Abri (legacy Yarlington) back in 2017. I started within the organisation as a Financial Responsibility Officer within our Welfare Benefits and Income team before moving to my role within the Community Investment Team in 2021. I have been working in Somerset but have recently taken on the Littlemoor area across the border in Dorset, and I am enjoying getting to know more about what is happening here. In my spare time I enjoy walking, reading and good food, although I must admit I am not the cook of the household. I have also just started to pick up running again and have found the couch to 5K app a fantastic companion, although it is not as easy as I remember!

You said, we did

You said: We want more opportunities to meet neighbours and connect with the community.

We did:

  • We engaged with residents through pop-up events in Bincombe Park, creating opportunities to share views, ask questions and connect with local community activities and support.
  • We supported and co-designed community family fun days with the Town Council, bringing residents together, strengthening local connections and gathering ideas for Littlemoor.
  • We funded 12 Dorset Wildlife Trust workshops to help residents connect with local green spaces, meet others and build stronger community networks through activities such as wreath making and guided walks.

You said: We want more opportunities and activities for young people

We did:

  • We brought families together through summer cooking sessions with Friendly Food Club, creating opportunities to share food, skills and connections.
  • We celebrated Littlemoor’s identity and community memories through HouseWorks’ ‘Between the Stops’ project, bringing generations together through art.
  • We are working with Littlemoor Family Hub to develop a community breakfast drop-in, creating a welcoming space for families and young people to connect.
