We've launched the Good Grub Club: Leftover Edition.
The Good Grub Club, a holiday hunger food initiative, has helped more than 100 families with food provisions during school breaks since it started in 2017. The scheme was adapted this year, helping people in Southampton and Bordon access healthy meals and food supplies during the spring lockdown.
And now the project is encouraging people to get creative with cooking with the Leftover Edition. 500 recipe bags are being distributed to families and individuals living in 11 areas across the south and south west of England including in Yeovil, Windsor, Gosport and Bournemouth. These areas will also benefit from at least five years of bespoke community action, helping to increase employment and improve health and wellbeing in their area.
The festive bags provide people with store cupboard ingredients and recipe guides to turn their leftovers into tasty meals including a turkey curry. Recipients are also invited to enjoy a fun cook-along video and get the whole family involved. Managing Director of Community Services at Abri, Michelle Dawson, said:
“It’s a really special time of year and the festive cheer of Christmas is needed more than ever. But we know that this can also be a challenging time for people who are in financial difficulty. We hope that by providing as many families as possible with these recipe bags and supplies, we can help families to put more meals on the table as well as reduce food waste.
“The bags are a great example of collaboration between local organisations and volunteers, plus our dedicated Community Development team. It’s a positive way to end a difficult year, and we hope it will inspire people to get cooking up some healthy, but most importantly tasty, treats this season.”
As well as providing families with food and recipes, the Good Grub Club is also educating young people and children on preventing food waste and what healthy eating looks like. To roll these out across the south, local food banks and volunteers have come together to provide ingredients and support their community.
With thanks to the Gosport Food Partnership.
